An international ring trial for antimicrobial susceptibility testing of Brachyspira hyodysenteriae

Published 2017-08-09

We aim to deliver a standard procedure for the antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) of Brachyspira hyodysenteriae, the main etiological agent of swine dysentry (SD). No internationally accepted standard AST methodology exists for B. hyodysenteriae and this presents a risk for the effective control of SD and compromises our ability to monitor worrying trends of reduced susceptibility towards antibiotics employed to treat SD. We will assess the AST protocol in a ring trail and use whole genome sequencing to examine the molecular basis of resistance. We aim to publish this work via VetCAST to facilitate harmonisation of AST methods worldwide.
