The silence of the lambs - aggressive anaplasmosis a growing concern in sheep on pasture

This research project aims at reducing the impact of the tick-borne infection anaplasmosis on grazing sheep. We will investigate the presence of anaplasma bacteria in i) questing ticks, ii) ticks collected from sheep and lambs showing clinical signs as well as iii) blood and organ samples from sick sheep. This will allow to identify and characterize the anaplasma species occurring in Sweden, including potential co-infections. Moreover, risk factors for anaplasmosis and the progress of disease will be investigated by mapping the current practices of sheep producers regarding tick prophylaxis and treatment of anaplasmosis. These results will form the basis for updated and more effective guidelines specifically aimed at improving sheep production and protecting sheep from anaplasmosis. In conclusion, the new knowledge will optimise timely prevention strategies to i) minimise animal suffering, ii) reduce antibiotic use and production losses and iii) strengthen Swedish sheep production.
